If you’ve been looking for a reason to get out and enjoy a night in town, here’s one: Cowan’s Public in Nutley was just named one of the Best Bars in New Jersey, and for good reason!
Tucked away at 229 Centre Street, Cowan’s isn’t just a bar, it’s a piece of Nutley history. Although Cowan's opened in 2015, the occupants of this building have been a bar since 1934! Cowan's is named after John Cowan, the former owner of the Nutley Pub.
It’s got that perfect blend of classic charm and modern craft cocktail culture with a speakeasy-vibe, decorated with humorous Prohibition propaganda from the early 1900s. Step inside and you’ll find art deco details, a warm glow, and bartenders who know how to make a drink you’ll remember, whether it’s alcohol or non-alcoholic mocktails!
And while Cowan’s may be getting statewide attention, it’s just one of several great spots in and around our area worth checking out:
The Oak Barrel Tavern (Nutley) – Cozy pub feel, great wings, and a solid beer list.
The Barrow House (Clifton) – Farmhouse-style restaurant and bar with an incredible selection of cocktails and a rustic, Instagram-worthy atmosphere.
Egan & Sons (Montclair) – Irish pub meets gastropub, perfect for a pint and some upscale comfort food.
The Shannon Rose (Clifton) – Fun Irish-themed spot with live music nights and hearty pub fare.
Just Jake’s (Montclair) – Laid-back hangout with a lively crowd, solid drink menu, and regular live bands.
If you’ve been meaning to explore more of the local nightlife, this might be your sign. Supporting our neighborhood spots keeps the local economy strong, and hey, it’s also a lot of fun.
So next time you’re making weekend plans, maybe skip the long drive and see what’s brewing right here at home. Who knows? Your new favorite bar might be closer than you think.
